Theology MA

Christian family counselor

Find out how you can help during consultation with families in such a way that the family activates its own strength and becomes stronger during effective problem solving than it was before the crisis!

Description of the training

"The aim of the training is to train intellectuals who practice theology at a high level, thereby being able to join the spiritual leadership of individual churches and religious communities" (KKK). Professional work with couples and families requires, in addition to theological knowledge, insight into other sciences, e.g. the acquisition of family counseling knowledge. The MA in Theology Christian Family Counselor training enables this integrated expansion of knowledge. In addition to acquiring theological knowledge, you can gain insight into how to help couples and families during consultation in such a way that they activate their own resources and, after effective problem solving, they can more successfully handle their future problems. You can learn about the family psychological and family theological aspects of the church rituals that accompany the most important stages of family life and the ritualization itself, and the consultation opportunities with which you can help families in your work. The knowledge you gain will have a positive impact on the functioning of your own family and relationships. Later, you can continue to expand your knowledge, develop your skills and abilities in our Family Counselor/Family Therapist training, where you can earn another family counselor qualification in two more semesters.

Cost / reimbursement:
With a state scholarship or self-funded: HUF 180.000 / semester

Training time in semesters:
4 semesters

Available credits: 120

Training type: Full-time and correspondence (hybrid training)

What will you learn?

In the 2-year process of the training, theory, practice and self-knowledge are organically intertwined: i.e. what you learn in theory, you can reflect on the experiences of your own family biography so that, by understanding them better, you do not project your own family image onto the families you work with. In this way, you can also recognize your strengths that help you in consulting work.  In the theoretical part: You gain insight into the family cultural history fufunction and social position, you will learn about the cycles of family development and specific sticking points. You get to know the system approach and system-based communication. You will get to know the most important family and couple therapy concepts, including Iván Böszörményi-Nagy's contextual theory and the ethical dimension related to it. Psychopathology I-II. subject is important for you to recognize if a family struggles with pathological phenomena, and be able to direct him to the right specialist, since the family counselor cannot perform therapeutic work, his role is to help with recognition and appropriate specialist care. In the methodological/practical part: You will learn the basic methods related to the basic knowledge of family counseling, the possibilities of solving obstacles in the life cycle changes of the family, the family counseling possibilities of the specific problems of relationship crisis, divorce, mosaic family, the basics of the methods of couple counseling. During our subject of consultation with families in special situations, you will see the specific elements of consultation with families living in crisis after crisis in the field of child protection. You will get help az case description methodology, and that case processing, and later we will process the experiences of family consultations led by you in supervision classes. During the training, you can only conduct consultations with supervision support, so personal participation in these is essential.

Admission requirements

Entry to the master's program: A basic degree. Admission and the need for a minor are decided during the admission interview. If you are not building on a degree in theology, you will need to write a biblical and theological test. In the minor program, based on the comparison of the knowledge serving as the basis for determining the credit, 90 credits from the core content of the BA in Theology program should be recognized. If, based on the above comparison, the existence of less than 90 credits, but at least 30 credits, can be proven, the missing credits must be acquired within four semesters from admission as specified in the PTF study and examination regulations (i.e. you can acquire the missing credits during the program).
